The Mind of Nikola Tesla
and the Power of Visualization
The inventions of Nikola Tesla serve as the building blocks for almost all the technology we use today. Modern day electrical systems and electrical devices evolved from the foundational systems he invented.
Tesla also took some of the earliest X-ray images, and invented one of the first remote controlled devices. The internet and social media are manifestations of the wireless world he imagined.
How did Tesla create such revolutionary technology?
How did he uncover the nature of the Universe?
The Power of Visualization
When Nikola Tesla was a young boy, his parents gave him daily lessons to train his memory, reasoning, and critical thinking. In his book, My Inventions: The Autobiography of Nikola Tesla, he describes these lessons:
It comprised all sorts of exercises — as, guessing one another’s thoughts, discovering the defects of some form or expression, repeating long sentences or performing mental calculations.
This training cultivated Tesla’s photographic memory; combined with a vivid imagination, Tesla developed the first manifestations of his power of visualization.
Initially, his mind’s eye wildly created images indistinguishable from reality. Later, he developed strategies to gain control of his visions, using his visualization power to explore imagined places and objects in his mind.
His power of visualization was a key component in his prolific career as an inventor. Tesla imagined and designed his inventions in his mind’s eye before building them in reality.
The initial idea for his AC induction motor came to him during a meditation walk in a park in 1882. He tinkered and updated the design in his mind for years; in 1888, he actualized his vision and filed a patent.
Tesla’s vision of an AC induction motor took 6 years to manifest.
His vision to harness the power of Niagara Falls took three decades.
In his autobiography, he writes about his interests as a child:
I was fascinated by a description of Niagara Falls I had perused, and pictured in my imagination a big wheel run by the Falls. I told my uncle that I would go to America and carry out this scheme. Thirty years later I saw my ideas carried out at Niagara and marveled at the unfathomable mystery of the mind.
Tesla’s work at Niagara Falls laid the foundation for how cities would be powered and illuminated for generations to come. However, his greatest dream for humanity was not realized in his lifetime.
In his later years, Tesla became obsessed with wireless technology; in 1926, he shared his vision of a wireless future, describing the present day connectivity of the internet, smart phones, and video chat.
When wireless is perfectly applied the whole earth will be converted into a huge brain, which in fact it is, all things being particles of a real and rhythmic whole. We shall be able to communicate with one another instantly, irrespective of distance. Not only this, but through television and telephony we shall see and hear one another as perfectly as though we were face to face, despite intervening distances of thousands of miles; and the instruments through which we shall be able to do this will be amazingly simple compared with our present telephone. A man will be able to carry one in his vest pocket.
What is the full potential of the human mind?
In what ways can we manifest our imagination?
To what extent can we understand the universe?
The mind of Nikola Tesla helps us answer these questions.
He demonstrated the power of training his mind’s eye and his intuition, empowering him to create the vivid world of his imagination.
His unique combination of cognitive intelligence and hard-nosed determination enabled his prolific career as an inventor and engineer.
Tesla’s ideas illuminate the inner workings of the universe.
The insight of his philosophies continue to be applicable today.
If you want to find the secrets of the Universe, think in terms of energy, frequency, and vibration.
